THE OPPORTUNITY NETWORK PREP PROGRAM
Everyone is always telling you it’s 11th grade that’s important, but really it’s 9th grade that gives you so many opportunities. We are strong enough to start planning for our future now. I didn’t realize that was the truth until OppNet.
– Madison Lee, OppNet Prep Class of 2014
Launched in 2011, OppNet Prep is an intensive year-long program that provides 9th grade students with an early foundation of college and career skills, aimed at increasing their odds of long-term success.
Prep serves more than 200 students using our Career Fluency® curriculum adapted to the needs of early high school students. Over the course of the year, the Prep model includes weekly workshops, monthly Saturday plenaries and a one-week summer enrichment program.
While select Prep students continue into our six-year Fellows program, the primary aim is for all students to build a solid foundation in college and career goal-setting and skill-building, to maximize the impact of any enrichment programs in subsequent high school years and to pave the way toward college success and meaningful career trajectories. With these goals in mind, The Opportunity Network hosts an annual Enrichment Fair to bring together youth-serving organizations and our Prep students to promote information sharing and recruiting.
OPPNET PREP PROGRAM
- 92% set goals and created an action plan toward college
- 94% of students completed their first draft of a professional resume
- 89% applied to one or more high school enrichment programs
