The Opportunity Network’s Summer Science Research Program (OppNet SSRP) aims to create a collaborative research community where students from under-resourced communities can develop foundational scientific research skills while amplifying their own and each other’s voices.

  • Research Skills

Throughout the three-week OppNet SSRP intensive, Fellows build foundational scientific research skills while developing an original research proposal around a topic of interest. Fellows learn how to conduct a literature review, read and synthesize scientific research, develop research aims and methods, analyze and communicate results, consider research ethics, and cite scientific sources. By the end of the program, Fellows complete a written research proposal and present their work to the OppNet community.

  • Collaborative Community

Fellows participate in peer review sessions and receive individualized support from Teaching Assistants on their proposals. Fellows learn alongside other students with shared interests in science while practicing how researchers give feedback, communicate their work, and collaborate with others. Career panels and other professional learning opportunities also connect Fellows with scientists and STEM professionals who can share their own educational and career journeys.

  • Real-World Impact

OppNet SSRP connects Fellows' research learning to real-world science and STEM careers. Through a partnership with Merck, Fellows engage with professionals working across the biopharmaceutical industry and visit Merck's campus to explore scientific and corporate career pathways firsthand. Throughout the program, Fellows also consider the real-world significance and future directions of their research before presenting their final proposals to the OppNet community.

We are grateful to our partners at Merck for sponsoring this program and helping Fellows build skills, make professional connections, and gain real-world insights into scientific careers.

An underlying goal of this program is to provide an experience for Fellows that will position them for competitive undergraduate science research assistantships and opportunities following OppNet SSRP.
