Get Involved

Volunteer

Throughout the year, OppNet has a number of events and workshops where you can engage with our talented students and offer up your professional and career advice. Here are a few ways to volunteer with us:

Speed Networking

Derived from the concept of "Speed Dating," this interactive and engaging experience provides students with opportunities to apply what they have learned from networking training. In short intervals with volunteer members, students will practice their personal elevator pitches, exchange business cards, and network – all before the buzzer signals the next move.

OppNet hosts several Speed Networking events on weekdays for our Fellows program each year in the spring and fall.

Please see below for typical Speed Networking requirements and details:

  • Duration per workshop: 90 minutes (typically from 6:00 – 7:30pm on a weekday)
  • Number of students per session: 100 to 140 high school students
  • Number of volunteers per session: approximately 50 volunteers

Resume Workshop

Volunteers are matched with Fellows to work on editing resumes and building their emerging professional stories. Students then use these resumes to apply for summer internships and job searches after college graduation.

Mock Interview Workshop

With the guidance of an OppNet facilitator, students learn the basics of a successful interview, from preparation all the way through to follow-up. Students are matched up with volunteers to practice simulated interviews.

Industry-Specific Career Exposure Panels

Throughout the academic year, OppNet hosts a number of industry-specific career roundtables and panel discussions to increase the awareness and exposure of Fellows to various companies, fields, and positions. Typically, the roundtables consist of four to five professionals who work in a variety of areas and roles in a particular field. The event is structured to encourage small group conversations and natural networking. All roundtables are held in the evenings on weekdays.

Please see below for the industries that we typically cover over the academic year:

  • Arts
  • Business, Finance, and Professional Services
  • Careers in Social Change
  • Communications and Marketing
  • Health Professions
  • International Careers
  • Legal Careers
  • Public Service
  • Writing and Media

Apply To Be A College Essay Coach

As a College Essay Coach, you’ll work with our 12th grade Fellows to help them brainstorm, draft, and edit their personal statements and supplemental essays for college applications. Each volunteer will be matched with one or two of our Fellows, and with the support of OppNet staff, will meet regularly with students to review and provide feedback on their writings in preparation for college applications later in the fall. We ask that coaches commit 10-12 hours per month over the course of four months, from September through December.
