As Senior Coordinator of Wellness Support, Shaniah manages the development, maintenance, growth, and communication of wellness resources for OppNet, providing timely mental health referrals and working with program staff to support the socio-emotional health of our Fellows. As a recent Master of Social Work (MSW) graduate from Fordham University, Shaniah has aspired to expand her skills within higher-ed social work. She received a Bachelor's in Psychology from SUNY New Paltz and has a passion for individual counseling and crisis intervention. While at OppNet, she aims to enhance her skills in counseling young adults/adolescents in need of immediate/general emotional support. Moreover, as a Resident Assistant at SUNY New Paltz, Shaniah has mentored first-year students and upperclassmen over the course of three years. She served as an on-call resource for students during crisis situations and followed up with students who experienced feelings of loneliness, depression, anxiety, and more. Additionally, she created, planned, and hosted a series of workshops pertaining to diversity & inclusion, growth & development, and well-being. Shaniah was born and raised in the Bronx by Jamaican immigrant parents, and values the importance of cultivating a professional identity that aligns with her social identity as a first-generation graduate and woman of color.
